I think it's a common situation to run into in the City. I know I've had to confront several things that I knew couldn't be true and yet in this place, it's solid, living, flesh and blood.
In that case, I'd attempt to understand it by attempting to logically disprove it. Look at the evidence, see if you can come up with sound, logical reasons backed by evidence that it isn't true.
Once you're finished, if it's still true then at least you've got solid reasoning and evidence on why it's true.
